Cop dies after crashing into unattended mental patient


A 23-year-old Police Constable, identified as Khrystama Yasin, of Vryheid Village, West Canje Berbice died Friday morning at the New Amsterdam hospital, hours after he was involved in an accident.

The police rank, who was riding a motorcycle bearing registration plate CG 7801, crashed into a mentally unstable woman who was on the roadway at Canje, Berbice at approximately 23.00hrs on Thursday night.

The woman has been identified as Yolanda Collins of Dazzle Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara and at the time of the accident, the woman was pushing a pedal cycle off the road, unattended. She is reportedly a patient at the National Psychiatric Hospital and it is unclear whether officers at the facility knew that she was on the roadway.

Collins was admitted to a nearby hospital and said to be stable condition. She was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital where she is being treated for a fractured left leg and arm.

While the police are investigating the accident, the Ministry of Public Health is investigating how the woman managed to leave the facility unnoticed.
