Last Friday, two days before the reopening of schools across the country, the the Ministry of Public Infrastructure closed the bridge on the Railway Embankment linking Good Hope and Monrepos.
The road was therefore closed from Lusignan on the Eastern end and Monrepos on the Western end. The Ministry had announced that it will be closing the road last month to facilitate works on that bridge, but, that never happened at the time when it was announced.
The closure created a sudden heavy traffic jam along the East Coast, spanning from as far back as Colidgen to Betterhope. The traffic got worst at the junction on the Railway embankment at the Eastern end of the closure, where vehicles coming from Goed Hope and the other end of the embankment converged to share a very narrow road to connect to the Main Highway. To make matters worse, no traffic rank was present at this juncture. One traffic rank was place on the Highway, that rank arrived at the junction around 7:30hrs.
Scores of persons who use public transportation, mainly buses, were in amassment at the amount of traffic on Monday morning. Several drivers are questioning the Ministry’s rationale behind commencing works at this period, they are calling on the GPF to make adequate arrangements to ensure the smooth flow of traffic along the East Coast during the period of construction.
