Two Opposition People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) parliamentarians along with four other party supporters were on Friday each placed on $500,000 by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.
The accused were charged with Omitting from the General Ledger of the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB) the sum of $362 million while they served as board members between 2011-2015. The six persons charged are Jagnarine Singh, Dharamkumar Seeraj, Ricky Ramraj, Prema Roopnarine, Nigel Dharamlall and Badri Persaud.
The accused were ordered to return to court of June 21 2017; they were also required to lodge their passports. The former Guyana Rice Development Board officials were told to report to the headquarters of the Special Organized Crime Unit (SOCU) in connections with operations of the board as it relates to 2013, 2014, and 2015.
According to former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall the charges are frivolous and it was intended to harass and embarrass the persons charged. In addition the attorney told media operatives yesterday that the act by SOCU will only cause the state additional monies. “These matters could take months or even years and it will never yield a conviction,” Nandlall stated.
