Local LGBT organisation in spot light for alleged missing funds

The head of Guyana’s leading LGBT organization is in the spotlight for alleged misappropriation of funds that was given to that organization by several International non-governmental and Governmental organizations.

According to information reaching the Guyana Daily News, the LGBT organisation was given monies on a monthly basis for outreach programs to gay men and commercial sex workers and HIV education and awareness programs in Guyana.

However, the official apparently converted approximately USD$7000 of the funds to his own use and benefit. When questioned about the missing funds by the executive body, the official stated that the monies were taken as a loan, but, the board never approved the monies according to information.

Guyana Daily News spoke to the head of one of the main contributor to the organization and it was indicated that the body pulled the plug on programs to the local organization for not complying with the contract and accountability aspects as a result of the misappropriation of the funds and also a non-functioning board.

According to one of the executive members, the director of the LGBT organization has repaid USD$2000 so far.

Only last year monies were discovered missing in an alleged fraud in which an executive of the organization was charged.
