The Guyana Teachers Union and the Ministry of Education met on Wednesday to iron out the impasse the sides have been having with regards to salary increases for teachers.
The Union noted that new information has been put on the table and which has to be considered by the union. After the meeting yesterday, the two sides emerged saying that “the two parties have committed to review the new information with a view of ensuring that the interest of all teachers will be considered, the Ministry of Education has undertaken to provide a matrix of figures which will be presented for discussion on October 12, 2018”, the sides noted. However, no information was provided on the new proposals, but that should be clarified by Friday when the two sides meet again.
The Ministry is hopeful that the Union will consider the new proposals, the old one is still on the table, but there are some changes to it.
In a statement, the union said that it hopes that the salary impasse will be resolved amicably and swiftly in the interest of teachers and education.
GTU appreciates the patience and support exhibited by its members and urge that they tarry a little long. Long live GTU, the statement noted.
