President and Opposition Leader to meet on Constitutional appointments

President David Granger and Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, are scheduled to meet at a date to be announced, to discuss appointments of Constitutional officers for the Police Complaints Authority, Police Service Commission and Public Service Commission. This was related to the media on Wednesday on the sidelines of an event at State House.

As with regards to the appointment of the Chief Justice and Chancellor, the President noted that he never asked the Opposition Leader to offer any counterproposals for the two top positions. Mr. Kenneth Benjamin and Justice Yonette Cummings- Edwards are President’s choice for Chancellor and Chief Justice.

He noted  “It is very unhealthy to have a Chancellor and Chief Justice who are acting and I would like to have them confirmed and the public knows my nominees. These are persons who have gone through a process and the advice I received is that they are fit and proper.”

The Police Service Commission’s names have been identified so far. Last year, government halted the promotions of the officers by the Service Commission, several complaints were reportedly made about some of the names on the list.

The names which were put forward for the commission which may soon be constituted are all retired Assistant Commissioners of Police.

They are Paul Slowe, Vesta Geneva-Adams, Clinton Conway and Claire Jarvis. Paul Slowe who recently served as the Chairman of a COI into how the police force handled an a report of an alleged assassination plot on the life of the president, is likely to emerge the chairman of the Police Service Commission.
