On March 12, 2018, a report was made at a police station on the West Coast Demerara about a 12 years old allegedly being sexually molested by the stepfather for several years.
The relatives are calling for swift justice as they are of the belief that the matter is being covered up by the Child Care and Protection Agency and the Police. According to relatives of the child, power and connections are calling the shots of the day.
Guyana Daily News was informed that the alleged perpetrator of the incident is currently employed by the Ministry of the Presidency and the mother currently works with a known child protection group in Guyana.
As a result of the incident, the child was allegedly removed from the home by the Child Care and Protection Agency and placed in the care of an aunt.
Guyana Daily News was also told that the alleged perpetrator went to the home of the aunt in a state vehicle and tried to persuade the child from testifying against him.
Director of the Child Care and Protection Agency, Ann Green when contacted by this newsoutfit on Friday, said that the matter is engaging the attention of the police and a multidisciplinary forensic interview will be done.
On Tuesday, contact was also made via telephone to a Senior Police official in the division where the incident occurred. We were told that the man is currently out on bail and that no report of sexual assault was reported at first, even during the initial forensic investigation. The senior officer also noted that presently a report of sexual molestation by the victim has surfaced and that the perpetrator will be re-arrested today, the necessary reports will now be made part of the file.
But, relatives are contending that the man is out because of his connections at the Ministry of the Presidency. They feel that the matter is going cold and wants swift justice, they also noted that directions were given to them by the director of the CCPA, Ann Grene, not to divulge anything to the press on the matter.
Social Rights activist, William Lockhart, who is representing the interest of the child, is calling on the Ministry of Social Protection to have the director of the CCPA, Ann Greene removed from office because he of the belief that the director is allegedly trying to cover up the incident.
