Micah Williams, a Trade Unionist, received two life sentences by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow, in the Sexual Offences Court in Georgetown Tuesday Afternoon.
The Court heard that the 34-year-old man had sexual penetration with a girl below the age of 16 when she was eight years old between January 1 and 31, 2016. The Judge told the court that the two life sentences will run concurrently and he will not be eligible for parole until he served 20 years in prison.
The man, when handed the sentences, said that this is the most terrifying day of his life and maintains that he is innocent. However, the court also heard that the man show no signs of remorse during his trial.
Leniency was sought by the defense counsel, but this was rejected by the Judge, Justice Barlow noted that the man did not take his role as a father.
“You cannot claim ignorance of sexual abuse, but during the trial you testified that you were an advocate against these very acts, noting that you were involved in campaigns and knew of the impact it would have on victims and what it does to people,” the learned Judge noted.
An impact statement which was prepared by child link could not have been read in court due to the fact that the virtual complainant did not sign it.
