Harmon defend Ministers charged for alleged malfeasance

Minister of State Joseph Harmon, on Thursday lashed out at the Opposition PPP for furthering charges against two of its top governmental officials for alleged malfeasance in office they currently hold.

On Thursday, Bishop Juan Edghill and Vickram Bharrat, both Opposition MPs, filed private criminal charges against two senior government officials, Dr. George Norton and Volda Lawrence.

The charges are that Minister of Health, Volda Lawrence, sometime between 16th January and 16th February 2017, she authorized the sole sourcing for the purchasing of drugs and medical supplies for the Georgetown Public Hospital from Ansa McAl Limited in the sum of $605 962,200 million.

As for Minister Norton, he has been accused of authorizing the rental of a Sussex street property to a close associated of his government for the sum of $12, 500, 000 per month.

Attorney-at-Law, Anil Nandlall, noted that he is following the precedent set out by SOCU that was used to charge two former high ranking officials of the past PPP government. He further noted that the courts will find favor in his application. Chief Magistrate Ann Mcleannon has summoned the two Minister to court, they will make their first appearance on 24th April, 2018.

However, the Minister of State noted that it is a way of distracting attention from alleged wrongdoings by the former Finance Minister, Ashni Singh and Winston Brassington, while they were in office.

Harmon noted that more charges will be filed against top officials of the PPP administration for alleged malfeasance when they were in government.

Harmon noted that he is confident that the two Ministers will be vindicated of the charges
