Hours after the Parliamentary Selection Committee reported to the National Assembly that names have been arrived at for the constitution of the Police Service Commission, Minister of Public Security, Khemraj Ramjattan, said that the choice of names are “excellent nominations.”
He told Guyana Daily News that the process of constituting the body should be done soonest as he expected cabinet to deliberate on the list at the earliest possible time.
With the commission not functioning, the senior officers within the organization are unable to be promoted and many of them who stood the chance of being promoted is at risk of retiring with them having a chance for promotion.
Last year, government halted the promotions of the officers by the Service Commission, several complaints were reportedly made about some of the names on the list.
The names which were put forward for the commission which may soon be constituted are all retired Assistant Commissioners of Police.
They are Paul Slowe, Vesta Geneva-Adams, Clinton Conway and Claire Jarvis. Paul Slowe who recently served as the Chairman of a COI into how the police force handled an a report of an alleged assassination plot on the life of the president, is likely to emerge the chairman of the Police Service Commission.
